The six important things
in my life...
- Pizza.
A good pizza must have a crust at least an inch thick, and be topped with almost
as much cheese. Any other toppings are allowed except olives, capers and
seafood...
...I haven't quite made up my mind over cooked pineapple chunks on a pizza.
- Cheddar
Seriously strong, in serious quantities.
Sadly the French don't have cheddar. I might make it my mission in life to rectify that
(besides apologising for the English behaviour re. the stupid beef wars). Wensleydale is
okay stuff, but nothing kicks ass like mature cheddar. Decent cheese. Leave the
bread and the branston pickle, just cut off a slice a centimetre wide (just under half an
inch) and eat it. Once you've done that, repeat until you are out of cheese. Then buy
some more (cheese, that is).
- A good movie
Preferably something with Alyson Hannigan, Samantha Mathis, Kellie Martin, or Michelle
Meyrink in it...
But I'll watch many films. My favourites are the weird ones (Heathers, Serial Mom,
etc) and something with a LOT of explosions.
Turn offs are mushy romance movies, adaptations of books written by people long since
dead and the obligatory slow motion sex scenes...
- Reading
If you are into horror type stuff - I recommend "Insomnia" (S.King) and
"Desperation" (S.King).
Before you jump to conclusions and think I'm a diehard Stephen King fan, I'll tell you I
never quite got around to finishing that massive tome known as "The Stand".
Besides which, I'm currently reading:
- Buffy the vampire slayer - Sons of Entropy (part three of the trilogy)
- A brief history of time (S.Hawking)
- programming.java (R.Decker - my uncle)
- Last Gasp (F. Hoyle)
- Billions and Billions (Carl Sagan)
I've recently finished reading:
- The drowned world (J.Ballard) [weird ending]
- Empty World (J.Christopher) This rocks!
- Contact (Carl Sagan) This rocks too!
- Something with a 'time sprout' in it - can't remember the name; by Rankin
- No witnesses
- Catching Alice (Clare Naylor) [funny]
- Buffy the vampire slayer - Out of the madness (part one of the trilogy)
- Buffy the vampire slayer - Ghost Roads (part two of the trilogy)
If you think I'm a slow reader (Last Gasp has been on the list for ages), think again.
Only, would I really admit to having read the entire "Mallory Towers"
series in a week? I think not!
The book I would completely recommend though, is No Witnesses. Unfortunately I cannot
remember the name of the author. But few books I have enjoyed so much I wished I could
turn it into a movie. This, IMHO, would do well as a movie. Great characterisations, good
plot. Twists and turns. Wander over to amazon.co.uk and get yourself a copy now!.
- Peas
Isn't it strange. Most kids won't touch green food. Me? I like brocolli and garden peas
and have done since I can remember.
But I'm fussy about my peas. They have to be just right, round and firm and a nice
colour (spot the double entendre!). Mushy peas are sacrilige.
My personal preference are Birds Eye frozen garden peas. Nice and firm. Ignore the cooking
instructions on the pack and do this:
- Fill a pan with cold water to twice the depth of the peas.
- Put the peas in the water, and bring it to boiling.
It is fascinating to watch the peas rise. You'll see what I mean if you do it.
- Switch the gas off (if electric, move to a cold ring) and leave for one minute.
Covering the pan is optional.
- Drain, toss in some fake butter (like Utterly Butterly or ICBINB (pronounced
ick-bin-b)) and eat...
- Last but CERTAINLY not least - Mom
Yup. I love my mom. She brought me into the world, and looked after me all by herself.
Now I'm 27 I feel I owe her a little bit more than a cruddy Mothers Day card.
Mom - for all those years, here's to you.
<raises virtual wine glass>
Thank you for not abandoning me. Thank you for protecting me, for showing me right from
wrong. For picking me up when I fall over. Thank you for a million other little things
that you did, and still do.
Thank you.
